Exil/Desexil in Uruguay
Men and women from various generations recall their life in exile in France, in Switzerland, Mexico, and Spain, as they return again to their long-lost home city Montevideo, Uruguay.
Today they look back on the feeling of being a stranger: to be lost, rejected, as well as the feeling of new possibilites, unknown and stimulating experiences, maturing.
They themselves have changed and now they return years later to a country that after 12 years of military dictatorship, barely resembles the place they so dearly missed overseas. The exile returning only to be exiled again, a seemingly viscious circle. In a different way. The second exile is perhaps the more difficult one. More intense.
Yet the protagonists do find comfort, and they feel they are part of a collective history. They identify with the Uruguay society, where the filmmaker herself lives as a stranger, a representative of one the lands of exile, "Switzerland".
